About Tynisa Gaines

Tynisa Gaines has a B.S. in Industrial Organizational Psychology, a Master’s in Public Administration, and is an Enrolled Agent. She started her tax career in 2001 when she took a tax course from National Tax Training School (NTTS), which is accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). Her work history in taxation includes an Office Manager for a CPA firm in Monterey, California in 2002, a supervisor for Jackson Hewitt Tax Service in San Antonio in 2003, District Accounting Coordinator for 32 Jackson Hewitt Stores in 2004, Tax Instructor for Jackson Hewitt from 2003-2005, Bookkeeper and Assistant District Manager for Jackson Hewitt in Annandale, VA from 2004-2005 and District Manager from 2005-2006 for 19 Jackson Hewitt stores in Northern Virginia.

She worked closely with an EA and CPA in her first job at a CPA firm in Monterey California. Jerry Wilburn, EA, (deceased) was the owner of Jackson Hewitt in Virginia and mentored her to become one as well.

You can become an enrolled agent by demonstrating special competence in tax matters by taking a online examination administered by Thomas Prometric. This track requires that you:

  • Apply on Form 2587 to take the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE);
  • Achieve passing scores on all parts of the SEE;
  • Apply for enrollment on Form 23; and
  • Pass a background check to ensure that you have not engaged in any conduct that would justify the suspension or disbarment of an attorney, CPA, or enrolled agent from practice before the IRS.

The IRS experience track: You can become an enrolled agent by virtue of past service and technical experience with the IRS that qualifies you for enrollment. This track requires that you:

  • Possess the years of past service and technical experience specified in Circular 230;
  • Apply for enrollment Form 23; and
  • Pass a background check to ensure that you have not engaged in any conduct that would justify the suspension or disbarment of an attorney, CPA, or enrolled agent from practice before the IRS.

Tynisa took the SEE exam in October of 2006. She received notification of her results in January of 2007, and received notification from the IRS of her Enrolled Agent Status in May 2007.She has joined the National Association of Enrolled Agents, and the Northern Virginia Society of Enrolled Agents.
